During the first, few weeks of kindergarten, we use familiar nursery rhymes to work on phonemic awareness with students. "Phonemic awareness" is teacher talk for hearing sounds within words. Being able to hear sounds in a word is a crucial step in learning to read and write. One nursery rhyme we worked with was Humpty Dumpty. The students had a blast reading the rhyme, acting out the story, and discussing what happens in the rhyme. It is so funny and impressive to hear why they think he fell off the wall. Some students said that he fell because he is shaped like an egg and eggs roll around. Others said that he wasn't being careful. I heard so many wonderful examples of higher order thinking! Ask your child at home, why he/she thinks Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall. You might be surprised by his/her thinking!

Mrs. DisonI have taught kindergarten for four years, but am moving to second grade this year. I am so excited to broaden my experience. Second grade was my favorite grade as a child and I am hoping I can recreate my positive experience for my students now. ArchivesCategories |
